Meet Your Coach
I didn’t start Downwind Drifter to build a brand; I started it because I became entirely consumed by the feeling of connecting open-ocean energy on a hydrofoil.
Like anyone, I quickly learned that downwinding is one of the most deeply humbling sports on the planet. There are no shortcuts. I’ve spent my fair share of time just struggling to stand on the board, blowing paddle-ups, and survival pumping to try to get home.
I realized early on that while the internet is full of flawless, heavily edited highlight reels, it’s severely lacking in honest, practical breakdowns of what it actually takes to progress. That’s why I started documenting the journey on YouTube. As the crew over at Foil Exchange's Best Content Guide put it, the channel has become a space for a "zenlike contemplation of reading bumps, the feel of various foils and boards, and water safety"—usually delivered with a healthy dose of dry humor.
For me, the goal has always been to cut through the industry marketing hype and share what actually works in long form so you can skip some of the frustration.
Sharing the Obsession
What started simply with a GoPro and a passion for ocean bumps has naturally grown into a community of riders looking to level up. Today, I split my time between sharing deep-dives with our YouTube Members, jumping on 1-on-1 Video Analysis sessions to fix technique frame-by-frame, and heading out for In-Person Coaching to fast-track progression safely.
And because we all deserve a break from freezing winter sessions in a thick steamer, the ultimate goal right now is launching dedicated Downwind Drifter Clinics in Fiji. Think crystal-clear warm water, consistent trade winds, and endless open-ocean glides.
If you're here to cut through the noise, talk gear honestly, and learn to read the ocean, welcome to the crew.
Be good, be safe, stay strong.
Hydrate.
P.s.
I haven’t taken this journey alone. I have been fortunate to make friends along the way from all over the globe. I now have contacts from brand owners to foil designers, world champions, to world record holders… friends from beginner to elite. Having a crew around me is what has helped me to progress and stay stoked! It’s not easy going it alone, but not everyone has people around them who can understand the obsession, the drive, the beauty of giving something your all, which gives life meaning and feelings again!
Make sure to surround yourself with those who truly want your success, to help you, not hold you back or make you feel embarrassed for putting yourself out there and grinding towards what you want.
Let me help you too.
Jason.
